Online sports betting revenue declines in Spain
The second quarter of the year has registered a decrease in revenue for online sports betting operations in Spain.
The gambling regulator from Spain, Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), released on Monday the financial figures from the second quarter of the year. Online sports betting suffered a setback during the three-month period ended June 30 in Spain.
The DGOJ said that online gaming operators generated €178.4 million, which represents a 6.7% rise from the same period in 2018. However, the DGOJ also said that figure is also a 7.9% decrease from the first quarter of the current year.
The sports betting segment fell 1.3% to €86.5 million year-on-year and 15% from the first quarter. Despite the double-digit figure fall from the previous quarter, the sports betting vertical managed to maintain relatively similar results from the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019, both held in the same period. However, pre-match sports betting revenue decreased 26.2% and in-play betting decreased 18.5% in Spain.
Moreover, turnover from sports betting fell 2.8% from the first quarter, but the figure increased to a 3.2% decline when taking into account 2018’s numbers.
Online casino’s performance
Online casino was one of the segments that performed well during the second quarter. Revenue posted a 22.2% increase to €69 million when compared to 2018, and a 4% improvement from the first quarter. Slots were the best performer with a 31.9% increase to €40.3 million.
Poker continues to decline
The poker market in Spain continues to struggle, as it only registered €19.4 million in the second quarter. The figure represents a 0.5% year-on-year fall and 8.5% decrease when compared to the previous quarter. Furthermore, the DGOJ has revealed that poker cash game revenue decreased 1.6% and tournament revenue fell 12.3%.
